RIP Lux Interior 1949-2009

Normally I wouldn’t take the time to explain who Erick Purkhiser was.  But his passing today due to a pre-existing heart condition warrants a tribute.  I’ve never done one and generally don’t read them.  I hope this gives some indication for the high-esteem I had for Lux Interior.  While I wasn’t the biggest Cramps fan of all-time, I respected what they did and so did a lot of the bands that we listen to today.

Widely credited for coining the phrase “psychobilly”, they’ve been cited as an influence by The White Stripes, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine and Reverend Horton Heat.

As always, I’ve got a few videos for ya.  Tried to do something for those who’ve never heard them (shame on you!) and some hard to find stuff for those who would appreciate it.

Their only breakthrough in mainstream American culture came in 1995 when they appeared on a Halloween episode of Beverly Hills 90210.

Awesome video of The Cramps when they played at a mental institution for the patients there.

The Cramps in all their live glory from 1981 doing Goo Goo Muck (bonus; it has Kid Congo Powers on guitar!)

People Ain’t No Good: not a live video, but lots of great stills from their live shows.

  1. Great videos. Thanks.

Lux, we know you’re walking with the groovy dead now. You will be missed.
