SXSW Preview- Pt 12: The T’s

We’re in the home stretch here.  16 days until SXSW!

The Tontons-  Is there a greater curse than being named your city’s best band?  I can think of three unsigned bands of the top of my head who won “best of” contests in their city and deserve more than they’ve gotten.  Welcome The Tontons, who won the 2008 Houston Press Award for best band. I first clued into them during SXSW 2008 when I heard their song “Atlas”.  It’s truly one of the best songs I heard last year.  Imagine Jimi Hendrix fronted by Billie Holiday….I know you don’t believe me, but one listen to this song will convince you otherwise.  Add some great dreampop/shoegaze references, a little Zepplin and then explain to me why this band isn’t huge.  Go see ’em, stand on the chairs, applaud wildly, give ’em a pat on the back and tell them how talented they are.  I’ve never met them, but any unsigned band with this much talent could probably use a little encouragement.  Then tell them to redesign their myspace page (see yesterday’s entry about web page design) and suggest they don’t ignore interview requests from websites that love ’em….but say it nicely.

Gadzooks!  The band doesn’t have a live video of Atlas that contains the entire song anywhere on YouTube.  Here’s a video for a different song.

After SXSW is completed, we’re going to start running some sort of weekly history lesson on the roots of alternative rock.  Each week we’ll highlight one band that’s been painfully underappreciated.  That Petrol Emotion is playing at SXSW.  They were such a wonderful band back in the 80’s, but as we prepared to post the most recent “good” song they’ve released we realized it was from 1987.  I just couldn’t pull the trigger.  Sorry boys, we’ll save you for the history lesson.

  1. Todd –

Nice comments about the Tontons. Totally agree with you. Myspace has been redesigned and we now have a splash page: that helps you get to more content on the Tontons.

If you are in Austin for SXSW, come check them out on 3/21 at Habana Calle 6 (Red River and 6th). They start at 8pm. If you want to schedule an interview. Give me a call.
